RMV Productions at the Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball 2016
If you’ve ever wondered what happens backstage at the Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball, then here’s a unique opportunity to find out.
For the fifth year running, RMV Productions have helped create a range of screen content for this incredible live event, hosted at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December 2016.
We thought it would be fun to give you a behind the scenes insight into the work we do, and what better way to do this than to cover our work at one of the UKs best live music events?
The Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball 2016 line-up was astounding with all our favourite performers like Calvin Harris, Little Mix, Sean Mendes, Craig David, Ellie Goulding, Olly Murs, Martin Garrix and Sean Paul to name-drop a few!
Imagine yourself at the event and looking at the stage – we create the visual content for the huge screens around the stage area. The stage is covered in 4k worth of HD pixel screens, supplied by XL Video, as well as two giant HD screens either side of the stage and the ‘arena motion’ pixel strip which wraps around the entire arena, just below the second tear of seating.
So….are you sitting comfortably? Then buckle your seat belt as we’re about to launch you right in to the action!
Friday 1st December 2016
Although the event takes place on a weekend, the RMV Productions team are on-site the day before for tech rehearsals. On the run-up to the show we spend six busy weeks preparing the content, so it’s important that when we get there we are completely prepared and ready to go. A huge amount of work goes in to getting the content perfect before we actually get anywhere near the venue.
Midday – The RMV Productions Team arrive at the O2 Arena and we make our way through all the security checks and have a health and safety briefing, which takes a while with all our equipment in tow.
1pm – It’s time to get ourselves properly set up. This means liaising with the backstage crew to get power, internet and video feed to our designated area. It’s also a time to catch up with everyone that we know in the Capital FM team – as we not only work on the Jingle bell Ball – but the Summertime Ball too.
2pm – We have our first proper run through of the video content with the Video Content Director Marcus Viner and the video play back operator, to make sure all the content is ready and that the correct versions are loaded into the system. Inevitable changes or newer versions need to be loaded into the play back system at this stage.
7pm – Now it’s time for the ‘Day 1 Screen Content Run Through’. This is where we run through all the video content for the show on the big stage screens with the creative director Beth Honan, the owner of Capital Radio, Ashley Tabor no less, and the director Marcus Viner. We receive notes from them, which can be anything from a few minor changes to completely new content needing creating. This year there were only minor tweaks, which were very reassuring and meant we were right on track.
10pm – Working late in to the night, it’s now ‘Day 2 Screen Content Run Through’ time! As before, we run through all the video content for the second day of the Jingle Bell Ball.
1am – We’re finally finished and it’s off to bed for some well deserved kip! We need to be rested and fresh for the busy weekend ahead.
SATURDAY – Show Day 1
8am – The RMVP team are onsite and raring to go.
8:30am-4pm – We love this part of the event, as its time to see and hear the artists have their rehearsals and sound checks. During rehearsals there can be more changes requested from either the artists, their managers or record labels. This year we had a lot of changes and new visuals requested by Sean Paul’s Creative Director. He was a last minute addition to the Jingle Bell Ball line-up, so they weren’t as prepared. We worked with the Creative Director to change the existing content and produce new visuals for his performance.
During the rehearsals our intro videos are shown personally to each artist by Creative Director Beth. It’s always nice to see the look on their faces and hear the claps and cheers at the edits we’ve done.
5pm – The doors to the O2 Arena open and it’s SHOW TIME! This is a busy time for video playback technician Romek, video programming tech Jonathan, and video director/mixer, Ivan. They basically run all the visuals for the show. We also capture a live feed of the show as it’s happening, so that we can edit highlights and produce more content if required.
11pm – The Jingle Bell Ball is now closed for Day 1. What a day! Time now to get some rest and fully recover, before it starts all over again tomorrow.
SUNDAY – Show Day 2
9am – Sunday is the same format again, except a slightly later start time. We’re onsite at 9am.
9.30am-4pm – Artists rehearsals/sound checks again for the new line-up. During rehearsals there can be more changes requested so we need to be ready to make any last minute edits.
5pm – Doors open for Day 2 and its show time again! The atmosphere is just as incredible and it’s a busy time for the team working on the visuals to make sure it all runs smoothly and is absolutely perfect.
11pm – It’s a wrap. We’re exhausted! But it’s not bedtime just yet – we’re off to the Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball After Party to celebrate!
